Block - accession to the throne of Grand Duke Guillaume - Trounwiessel
Created for the accession to the throne of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume, this commemorative philatelic souvenir sheet was designed for POST Luxembourg to mark a historic moment in the country’s contemporary history.
The project combines heritage, symbolism, and a contemporary visual language inspired by Luxembourg’s cultural identity and the values associated with the new Grand Ducal era. Particular attention was given to detail, colour symbolism, materiality, and print finishing throughout the design process. Following extensive research into Grand Duke Guillaume’s life, values, and environment, the visual concept aimed to create an elegant balance between tradition and modernity.
The carefully developed colour palette conveys emotion, continuity, and national symbolism. To reinforce the tactile and ceremonial character of the piece, a subtle natural texture effect was integrated into the background design as a visual homage to the gardens and natural surroundings of the Grand Ducal Palace. The stamp block was further enhanced with Pantone gold printing, creating a refined shimmering effect that elevates the luxurious and collectible quality of the final edition. The title
“Eng grouss Botschaft op engem klenge Format” (“A big message in a small format”),
a quote by Jill Els from an interview about the project, reflects the idea of communicating identity, memory, and symbolism through the intimate medium of a stamp.
The design was selected through an invited competition organised in collaboration with Design Friends Luxembourg, where several agencies and designers from Luxembourg were invited to submit creative proposals for the commemorative issue.
