Real Unreal | Virtual Reality Game
___
Concept, technical implementation, and 3D visualization of an interactive VR experience that merges the analog and digital realms. The game is based on the phenomenon of human perception, where moving objects are detected faster than static ones – thus, only moving elements become visible to the player in the virtual world.
These elements appear as animated creatures – some good, some evil. Their behavior is influenced by proximity and movement, creating an immersive interplay between fantasy and reality.
The position of real-world visitors is tracked using a Kinect system. A glowing red circle on the floor represents their virtual counterpart – making the otherwise invisible beings visible to everyone in the physical space. Through the Oculus Rift, players see these counterparts as fantastical creatures in the virtual world.
A central element is the visualization of “souls.” Each creature carries a randomly assigned colored core that symbolizes its virtual identity. When two good souls meet, they merge into a larger, stronger entity. This game mechanic encourages collaboration and makes confrontation more unpredictable.
Developed using Oculus Rift, Kinect, projectors, and Unity 3D. The project was realized in collaboration with computer scientists Sven Ehses and Dennis Gross.
